## Biography of Allan Kardec: from http://www.spiritisme.org

Born into a traditional family distinguished in law and advocacy from Lyon, France, on 3rd October 1804, Allan Kardec (Christened: Hippolyte Leon Dinizard Rivial) did not follow this tradition. Instead, from early youth he felt inclined towards the study of science and philosophy.

Educated at the Pestalozzi Institute, in Yverdun (Switzerland), Kardec quickly became one of the most eminent disciples of the celebrated teacher. He was also one of its most zealous advocates of this system of education, which came to exercise such a great influence upon educational reforms in both France and Germany at that time.

When his studies were concluded Kardec returned to France. Have gained a profound knowledge of German during his time in Switzerland he then translated various educational and moralistic books into that language, and very characistically, he also included the works of Fenelon in these translations because they had especially appealed to him.

Between 1835 and 1840 in his private residence in the rue de Sevres, in Paris, he set-up free courses in Chemistry, Comparative Anatomy, Physics and Astronomy, amongst other subjects. Always anxious to make his lessons attractive and interesting he invented an ingenious method for teaching arithmetic; as well as a mnemonic board of French history, to enable the memorisation of dates and happenings that most stood out, together with the discoveries that most shone in each epoch.

Even before Spiritism had popularised the pseudonym Allan Kardec, Rivail was already becoming known for several successful educational books he had published.

About 1855 the matter of spirit manifestations having come into general focus, he began to dedicate himself to persistent and persevering observation of these phenomena, with the main objective of deducing their philosophical consequences. He had quickly foreseen the existence of new Natural Laws: those that govern the relationship between the visible and invisible worlds. In the action of the latter he recognised one of the forces of Nature, the knowledge of which would cast light upon an immensity of problems hitherto unsolvable. Now he felt that a solution, from the religious point of view, was within reach.

His principle works based on this subject are:

- The Spirits' Book 1st edition published 18th April 1857.
- The Mediums' Book published January 1861
- The Gospel According to Spiritism published April 1864
- Heaven & Hell or Divine Justice According to Spiritism published August 1865
- The Genesis, the Miracles and the Predictions published June 1868
- What is Spiritism ? published July 1859
- Spiritist Journey in 1862
- Posthumas Works published 1890
- The Spiritist Magazine a monthly publication of psychological studies, begun on 1st January 1858.

Allan Kardec founded the very first Spiritist Society that was adequately organised in Paris on 1st. April 1858. It was named the Parisian Society for Spiritist Studies and had as its exclusive objective the study of everything that could contribute towards the progress of the new science. Kardec defended, and quite rightly, anything written under the influence of preconceived or systematic ideas. Characteristically calm and unemotional, he observed the facts, and from these he then deduced the laws that ruled them. He was the first person to present a relative theory for these facts and to form a methodical and doctrinal basis as a consequence. This demonstrated that the facts hitherto erroneously qualified as ‘supernatural’ were bound by laws. He then included them within the order of natural phenomena, thereby destroying the last refuge of the ‘miraculous’ and as such one of the elements of superstition.

The date of the publication of The Spirits’ Book marks the founding of Spiritism which, till that time had only been represented by a few scattered elements, with no co-ordination, without which it had not possible to appreciate the vast implications.

The material proofs presented by Spiritism of the existence of the soul and of a future life tend to destroy materialistic and pantheistic ideas. One of the most fertile principals of these Teachings that derive from former ideas, is that of the plurality of existences, already entertained by a multitude of philosophers, both ancient and modern. From this stems the explanation of all the apparent abnormalities of human life, all the intellectual, moral and social inequalities. Thus allowing man to know where he comes from, where he is going, to what end the Earth exists, and why we suffer while here. All innate ideas explain themselves through the knowledge acquired during past lives, and sympathies and dislikes through the nature of past relationships.

Spiritism has as its motto: Without charity there is no salvation. This means that there must be equality amongst all men, as well as tolerance, liberty of conscience and mutual benevolence when facing God.

“Unshakeable faith is only that which can meet reason face to face in every human epoch. In order to have faith it is necessary to have a certain base, which is to thoroughly understand why you believe. In order to believe it is not sufficient to merely see, but above all else it is necessary to understand.” (From The Gospel According to Spiritism)

Allan Kardec, the untiring worker, returned to the spiritual world on 31st March 1869.
